Pursue Clarity: A Recap
Discerning whether you’re called to serve in the church or even try a new approach to ministry can be an overwhelming task. However, what we’ve learned at New Ventures is it’s helpful to have others with you on the journey.
New Ventures Apprenticeships involve being paired with mentors and connected with various hands-on and other learning opportunities. In addition to this, Apprentices set aside a few days every year to gather with others for a retreat. This in-person reflective time is called “Pursue Clarity,” and together participants not only engage in teaching sessions but meals, exploring, and asking questions together.
This year, 25 Apprentices along with 9 hosts in 4 in-person locations across Canada: Vancouver, Calgary, Winnipeg, and Burlington. Participants also had the chance to meet one another virtually as the event had some elements that were simulcast online. Teaching and reflection was delivered by Canadian pastor and author Alistair Sterne and participants also had a chance to meet with current leaders in the New Ventures space to ask questions and learn about ministry in the Canadian context.
Here is what some participants had to say:
“In my mind, a retreat usually starts with ‘singspiration’ and then somebody will give a long preaching followed by prayers. The Pursue Clarity retreat was not like that! It was really special and creative. Each day, people from different locations gathered online to share together. We had three field workers who shared their stories. That was inspiring. That made me understand that they are also ordinary people like me, not super heroes, but they put their trust in God and are being used by Him.”
“I felt like I heard from Jesus - and it's been a while since I've felt confident in hearing something from him.”
“I found the retreat helpful in solidifying God's calling on my life. Although the near future is still uncertain, I have a better idea of where God is calling me long term.”
To reach Canada on mission, we will need to think in new ways and generously support the Spirit’s lead. We are grateful to trace these stories of God stirring the hearts of new people to go to new places in Canada.
